Patrick Joseph Peyton, C.S.C.
Also known as "The Rosary Priest" · Patrick Joseph Peyton
Life
Patrick Joseph Peyton was born on 9 January 1909 in Carracastle, near Attymass in County Mayo, Ireland, the sixth of nine children of a small-tenant farming family. The Peyton home was steeped in nightly recitation of the family Rosary — an experience that would define his entire ministry.
In 1928 he emigrated with his brother Tom to Scranton, Pennsylvania, intending to find work. A meeting with the rector of the local cathedral redirected him toward the priesthood, and he entered the Congregation of Holy Cross in 1929. While a seminarian at the University of Notre Dame he was diagnosed with advanced tuberculosis and given little hope of recovery. He attributed his sudden, complete healing to the Blessed Virgin, and from his hospital bed vowed to dedicate his priesthood to her honour.
He was ordained on 15 June 1941. From a single radio broadcast in 1945 he built a global media apostolate that became known as Family Rosary Crusade and Family Theater Productions. Using radio, film and Hollywood stars — Bing Crosby, Loretta Young, Grace Kelly and dozens more — he carried two simple messages around the world: 'The family that prays together stays together' and 'A world at prayer is a world at peace.'
He preached at over forty massive Rosary Rallies in cities across the Americas, Europe, Africa, the Philippines and Australia, drawing crowds estimated at over twenty-eight million people in total — including two million in Manila in 1959 and more than a million in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo.
Father Peyton died at Holy Cross House, San Pedro, California on 3 June 1992. His cause for canonisation was formally opened in 2001, and on 18 December 2017 Pope Francis declared him Venerable. Holy Cross Family Ministries continues his work today.
